The main characters, an ensemble cast of seven extremely precocious teenagers, are residents of the top secret and isolated Pinewood Military Installation. Their mission is to investigate highly abstract scientific theory, calculate precise mathematical formulas, and stay out of trouble. They have the first two covered; it is the third that they blow-literally. Christmas Eve finds base security slipshod and the youngsters up to mischief. Jimmy wants to impress Leslie by taking her off base for their first date. In planning this event, he unintentionally sets off a chain of unpredictable events involving time travel, genetic mutations, computer simulations, undercover operations, and violent explosions. Although very little is as it seems, masterful foreshadowing and subtle hints allow the last twenty pages to logically explain the situation in the first chapter. With snappy dialogue, short chapters, and video-game-like action, this book will be a good match for many reluctant readers. Boys will likely find the violence awesome, and girls should appreciate the tragic love story and romantic conclusion. The author's plot twists and surprise revelations will appeal to readers who like to be tricked. This book would be an excellent addition to any library or classroom collection.
