Die mysteriöse Maschine, die Jim Pendrake durch Zufall entdeckt, birgt die Möglichkeit, der Menschheit die Weiten des Universums zu erschließen. Die Suche führt Jim Pendrake zu einer phantastischen Welt, die unter der Herrschaft eines Ungeheuers steht. Alfred Elton van Vogt, am 26.4.1912 in Manitoba (Kanada) geboren, begann seine schriftstellerische Karriere als Autor von Hörspielen, Zeitungsartikeln und Stories. Seine erste Arbeit auf dem Gebiet der SF erschien im Magazin ASTOUNDING (heute: ANALOG). Zum gegenwärtigen Zeitpunkt umfaßt sein Gesamtwerk ca. 50 SF-Bücher (Romane und Kollektionen). Der Autor ist mit Lydia I. Brayman, Modell und Gerichtsdolmetscherin, verheiratet und lebt in Hollywood. Pendrake had stumbled into a land whose inhabitants were picked up at random by a time machine.
