Emma, by Jane Austen, is a novel about youthful hubris and the perils of misconstrued romance. The novel was first published in December 1815. As in her other novels, Austen explores the concerns and difficulties of genteel women living in Georgian-Regency England; she also creates a lively comedy of manners among her characters. Before she began the novel, Austen wrote, "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like." In the very first sentence she introduces the title character as "Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich." Emma, however, is also rather spoiled, headstrong, and self-satisfied; she greatly overestimates her own matchmaking abilities; she is blind to the dangers of meddling in other people's lives; and her imagination and perceptions often lead her astray. 40001.tif 1 40002.tif 2 40003.tif 3 40004.tif 4 40005.tif 1 40006.tif 6 40007.tif 7 40008.tif 8 40009.tif 9 40010.tif 10 40011.tif 11 40012.tif 12 40013.tif 13 40014.tif 14 40015.tif 15 40016.tif 16 40017.tif 5 Binder2.pdf 1 50001.tif 17 50002.tif 18 50003.tif 19 50004.tif 20 50005.tif 21 50006.tif 22 50007.tif 23 50008.tif 24 50009.tif 25 50010.tif 26 50011.tif 27 50012.tif 28 50013.tif 29 50014.tif 30 50015.tif 31 50016.tif 32 50017.tif 33 50018.tif 34 50019.tif 35 50020.tif 36 50021.tif 37 50022.tif 38 50023.tif 39 50024.tif 40 50025.tif 41 50026.tif 42 50027.tif 43 50028.tif 44 50029.tif 45 50030.tif 46 50031.tif 47 50032.tif 48 50033.tif 49 50034.tif 50 50035.tif 51 50036.tif 52 50037.tif 53 50038.tif 54 50039.tif 55 50040.tif 56 50041.tif 57 50042.tif 58 Emma is an adapted Intermediate level reader written by Jane Austen.
