«Le XXe siècle touche à sa fin, et nous sommes tous tentés de nous demander : quelle sera sa place dans l'histoire ? Comment s'en souviendra-t-on un jour ? Pas plus qu'un autre, je ne connais la réponse complète à ces questions; mais je suis sûr que l'une des inventions du siècle sera durablement attachée à son souvenir : les camps totalitaires. Nous avons fait la découverte du régime politique extrême, le totalitarisme, et de son extrême à lui, les camps. Cette institution macabre se prête à toutes sortes de commentaires, historiques, politiques, psychologiques. Celui que je propose ici, à travers une enquête narrative et personnelle, est différent : il a trait à la morale.
