دربارهٔ کتاب

"This book introduces the concept of soil security and its five dimensions: Capability, Capital, Condition, Connectivity and Codification. These five dimensions make it possible to understand soil's role in delivering ecosystem services and to quantify soil resource by measuring, mapping, modeling and managing it. Each dimension refers to a specific aspect: contribution to global challenges (Capability), value of the soil (Capital), current state of the soil (Condition), how people are connected to the soil (Connectivity) and development of good policy (Codification). This book considers soil security as an integral part of meeting the ongoing challenge to maintain human health and secure our planet's sustainability. The concept of soil security helps to achieve the need to maintain and improve the world's soil for the purpose of producing food, fiber and freshwater, and contributing to energy and climate sustainability. At the same time it helps to maintain biodiversity and protects ecosystem goods and services"--Page 4 of cover Front Matter....Pages i-xviii Front Matter....Pages 1-1 Soil Security: A Rationale....Pages 3-14 Soil Security: Dimensions....Pages 15-23 Front Matter....Pages 25-25 Soil Capability: Exploring the Functional Potentials of Soils....Pages 27-44 Distinguishing Between Capability and Condition....Pages 45-52 Valuing of Soil Capability in Land Surface Modeling....Pages 53-61 Soil Capability for the USA Now and into the Future....Pages 63-76 Quantifying Capability: GlobalSoilMap....Pages 77-85 Testing the Links Between Soil Security, Sustainable Land Management Practices and Land Evaluation....Pages 87-97 Front Matter....Pages 99-99 General Concepts of Valuing and Caring for Soil....Pages 101-108 Soil Health: Challenges and Opportunities....Pages 109-121 Using Soil Survey to Assess and Predict Soil Condition and Change....Pages 123-135 Root-Microbe Interactions in Response to Soil Conditions....Pages 137-144 Securing Our Soil in Intensive Monoculture Cropping Systems....Pages 145-151 Soil Organic Carbon Stocks and Soil Respiration in Tropical Secondary Forests in Southern Mexico....Pages 153-165 Simulating Impacts of Bioenergy Sorghum Residue Return on Soil Organic Carbon and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Using the DAYCENT Model....Pages 167-180 Front Matter....Pages 181-192 Economics, Energy, Climate Change, and Soil Security....Pages 193-193 Understanding Soils’ Contribution to Ecosystem Services Provision to Inform Farm System Analysis....Pages 195-205 The Dollars and Cents of Soil Health....Pages 207-217 The Value of Soil’s Contributions to Ecosystem Services....Pages 219-226 Front Matter....Pages 227-235 Economics of Land Degradation to Estimate Capital Value of Soil in Eurasia....Pages 193-193 Social Licensing to Secure Soil....Pages 237-246 Front Matter....Pages 247-251 Soil Renaissance and the Connection to Land Managers....Pages 253-253 Links Between Soil Security and the Influence of Soil on Human Health....Pages 255-260 Soil Contamination and Human Health: A Major Challenge for Global Soil Security....Pages 261-274 The Measurement of Soil Security in Terms of Human Health: Examples and Ideas....Pages 275-295 The Meta Soil Model: An Integrative Multi-model Framework for Soil Security....Pages 297-303 Integrating New Perspectives to Address Global Soil Security: Ideas from Integral Ecology....Pages 305-317 Applying the Meta Soil Model: The Complexities of Soil and Water Security in a Permanent Protection Area in Brazil....Pages 319-329 Bridging the Research Management Gap to Restore Ecosystem Function and Social Resilience....Pages 331-340 Engendering Connectivity to Soil Through Aesthetics....Pages 341-350 The Role of Master Gardeners in Providing Horticulture Education to Marion County, Florida, Residents....Pages 351-363 Front Matter....Pages 365-368 Soil-Water-Food Nexus: A Public Opinion and Policy Perspective....Pages 369-369 Whose Security is Important?
