Comparso per la prima volta in Germania nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento, fu più volte ristampato e tradotto nei maggiori paesi europei. Misterioso è il suo autore, Subhadra Bhikshu (1852-1917), alias monaco Shubadra, che era forse un convertito di origine tedesca. Il suo libro si distingue per esposizione limpida e brevità: diviso in tre capitoli espone la vita di Buddha, i cardini della sua dottrina e la regola monastica. In Italia comparve per la prima volta nel 1897, fu ristampato più volte ed ebbe come curatore Giuseppe De Lorenzo, discepolo del celebre orientalista viennese Karl Eugen Neumann.
