Numa Denis Fustel de Coulanges was a lifelong academic. He was born in Paris in 1830, was a professor of history at Strasbourg from 1860-70, then a lecturer at theÉcoleNormale Supérieure until 1875, then a professor at the Paris faculty of letters until 1878, and then occupied a chair of medieval history created for him at the Sorbonne. He was certainly an extremely skilled and self-confident scholar, who seems to have been one of the first of the later 19thcentury historians who realized how thoroughly modern conceptions of state, society and religion obfuscated the radically different traditions they had replaced.The Ancient Citywas his first book, published when he was 34. It is interesting that his final, unfinished project was also a work of significant revisionism, as he attempted to show that the Germanic invasion of Gaul was more of an integration into the Roman imperial structure than a conquest of it. Although he seems to have taken no part in political life, his study of the Germanic invasion of Gaul was inspired by the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1. The 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica contains the following enigmatic remarks: “He wished the institutions of the present to approximate more closely to those of the past, and devised for the new French constitution a body of reforms which reflected the opinions he had formed upon the democracy at Rome and in ancient France.” I have not been able to find more information regarding those proposed reforms, or how he wished to make modern institutions more closely approximate ancient ones.

This challenging collection of problems is organized into seven carefully crafted, thoughtful chapters on the Sun and the nature of the solar system; the motion of the planets; the Sun, Earth, and Moon; the sky as observed from the rotating, revolving Earth; other planets, their satellites, their rings; asteroids, comets, and meteoroids; and the radiations and telescopes. From question 1, "List characteristics of the solar system that are major clues in devising a hypothesis of its origin and evolution, " through question 924, "Give a brief list of the contributions of radio and radar technologies in lunar and planetary astronomy, " the problems range in difficulty from ones requiring only simple knowledge to ones requiring significant understanding and analysis. Many of the answers, in turn, illuminate the questions by providing basic explanations of the concepts involved.
