En mars 1913, Henry de Montherlant est renvoyé du collège Sainte-Croix pour pédérastie. Il s'inspire de cette affaire cinquante-six ans après son renvoi pour écrire 'Les Garçons'. Dans un collège de l'enseignement libre, un élève de philo, Alban, tente une «réforme» du collège où règne l'indiscipline. Il échouera dans sa tentative, mais son renvoi - dû en partie à un excès de zèle - ouvrira les yeux du supérieur qui, par une vaste épuration, fera, lui, la réforme qui a été manquée par son élève. Et le collège deviendra un établissement exemplaire.On retrouve l'abbé de Pradts de La ville dont le prince est un enfant, prêtre impeccable, respecté de tous, et que son goût pour l'éducation et pour l'atmosphère cléricale ont mené à prendre la tonsure, bien qu'il n'ait pas la foi - ce qu'il se fait un point d'honneur de dissimuler à tous.On y retrouve aussi le supérieur de La ville, un «juste» cruellement puni pour son esprit chimérique qui l'a rendu aveugle à la réalité.On y trouve des nouveaux venus : la mère d'Alban ; Paul de Linsbourg, un ancien camarade de collège ; Mlle de Guerchange, qu'il rêve d'épouser quand la déclaration de guerre les sépare. It is a dark and brooding story of the friendship between two schoolboys. A constricting cloud of Catholicism permeates the story, and acts as one of the heavies in the plot. Alban, sixteen years old and the heir to a dukedom, joins a new school. Here he discovers a culture, officially encouraged by the teachers, where the boys form close attachments. He pairs off with the younger Serge, who is only fourteen. The two are attracted to each other, and fall in love.
