In order to be true to himself, he goes against the grain of societys often unspoken rules of class, wealth, and politics. Forster understood that his homage to same-sex love, if published when he completed it in 1914, would probably end his career. Thus, Maurice languished in a drawer for fifty-seven years, the author requesting it be published only after his death (along with his stories about homosexuality later collected in The Life to Come ). Since its release in 1971, Maurice has been widely read and praised. It has been, and continues to be, adapted for major stage productions, including the 1987 Oscar-nominated film adaptation starring Hugh Grant and James Wilby. The story of two young men in pre-World War I England who meet at Cambridge and fall in love and then must struggle with the moral standards of the time. Clive bows to societal and family pressure and enters a loveless marriage, while Maurice resists and finds lasting love with a working-class man. Forster was reluctant to publish the book in his lifetime because such stories were not supposed to end happily Maurice is a novel by E. M. Forster. A tale of homosexual love in early 20th-century England, it follows Maurice Hall from his schooldays through university and beyond. It was written in 1913–1914, and revised in 1932 and 1959–1960. Once a term the whole school went for a walk-that is to say the three masters took part as well as all the boys.
