دربارهٔ کتاب

Practical applications of mechanical ventilation is a detailed book on the ventilator, its uses, and the principles that govern it. It explains the various ventilatory strategies that can be used during different disease states. The book consists of forty-three chapters, grouped into six sections. The first section is respiratory physiology. This section delves into the basics of physiology. Physiological anatomy of the respiratory system, mechanics of respiration, principles of ventilation are some of the topics covered. This is followed by a section on effects of controlled ventilation. This section talks about the application of pressure to gases, in order to facilitate absorption by the lungs, and the effects this process can have in different states. The section is know your ventilator. The parts and basic principles that control the working of a ventilator are dealt with in this section. The next section, ventilatory parameter, explains the normal and abnormal values of the various parameters are explained in this section. Inspiratory rise time, for example. Section 5 is titled modes of ventilation. There are, in essence, two modes of mechanical ventilation. When air if forced into the lungs or, when air is sucked in. This is followed by the final section, ventilation strategy. Practical applications of mechanical ventilation by shaila shodhan kamat is suitable for both practitioners and students, for its detail and completeness. The book was published by jpb in its first edition in 2010. It is available in paperback. prelims 2 Chapter-01_Anatomy of Respiration 18 Chapter-02_Respiratory Mechanics 33 Chapter-03_Applied Respiratory Physiology 43 Chapter-04_Distribution of Ventilation 52 Chapter-05_Compliance 63 Chapter-06_Resistance 75 Chapter-07_Shunt 87 Chapter-08_Distribution of Ventilation and Perfusion 94 Chapter-09_Diffusion Defects 99 Chapter-10_Lung Volumes and Capacities 105 Chapter-11_Work of Breathing 115 Chapter-12_Physiological Effects of Spontaneous vs Controlled 132 Chapter-13_Harmful Effects of Controlled Ventilation 142 Chapter-14_Minimizing the Harmful CVS Effects of Controlled Respiration 161 Chapter-15_Ventilator At a Glance 164 Chapter-16_Fractional Inspired Oxygen Concentration 190 Chapter-17_Tidal Volume during Mechanical Ventilation 206 Chapter-18_Inspiratory Flow Rate 214 Chapter-19_Peak Inspiratory Pressure 224 Chapter-20_Breathing Cycle and InspiratoryExpiratory Time 229 Chapter-21_Distribution of Inspired Gas and Ventilator Rate 239 Chapter-22_Ventilator Alarm Settings 243 Chapter-23_Waveforms of Mechanical Ventilation 253 Chapter-24_Time Constants in Mechanical Ventilation 274 Chapter-25_Monitoring of Lung Mechanics 289 Chapter-26_What is Mode 300 Chapter-27_Controlled Mandatory Ventilation 308 Chapter-28_Assisted Controlled Mandatory Ventilation 313 Chapter-29_Volume Controlled Ventilation 318 Chapter-30_Pressure Controlled Ventilation 329 Chapter-31_Synchronized Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation 341 Chapter-32_Biphasic Positive Airway Pressure 351 Chapter-33_Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and Extrinsic Positive End-expiratory Pressure 369 Chapter-34_Pressure Support Ventilation 398 Chapter-35_Volume Support Ventilation, Pressure Regulated Volume Control Ventilation, Automode 421 Chapter-36_Intrinsic Positive End-expiratory Pressure 432 Chapter-37_Application of Basic Principles in Respiratory Failure 444 Chapter-38_Ventilatory Management of Severe Asthma 456 Chapter-39_Ventilatory Management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases 477 Chapter-40_Ventilatory Strategy for ARDS 493 Chapter-41_Ventilatory Strategy for HeadBrain Injury 526 Chapter-42_Ventilatory Strategy for Neuromuscular Diseases 535 Chapter-43_Weaning from Mechanical Ventilation 540 Index 567 This book has been written keeping in mind mainly young resident doctors of anaesthesiology, surgery and medicine confronting mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit for the first time. For certain reasons no references are quoted in the book. Firstly, it was never objective to produce a reference source book. Secondly, the book is intended to be useful in day-to-day practice and it has been the author experience that including references will make it difficult to achieve a concise format. The attempt has been to produce a clear and practical understanding of ventilators and hence the book provides concise and accurate information on the basics of respiratory physiology, its clinical applications providing optimal knowledge in ventilatory strategy in intensive care. The book comprises of 43 chapters grouped into six parts to cover various aspects of ventilatory management. The aim of this book is to augment clinical teaching and inspire a more detailed study. The book has been written as a practical guide for the people working in an intensive care unit and postgraduate students
