دربارهٔ کتاب

The discipline of hematology ranges widely from the diagnosis and management of anemia to hematologic malignancies and transfusion medicine, and involves significant ethical issues and problems in statistical interpretation. In Primary Hematology, Ayalew Tefferi, MD, and a team of authoritative practicing physicians concisely detail their most effective approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of hematological disorders, including anemia and other cytopenias, primary and secondary myeloproliferative disorders, lymphoid and plasma cell disorders, and thrombotic and bleeding disorders. For each illness these expert clinicians provide a brief review of basic concepts and a discussion of its symptomology and classification, its diagnostic tests, and strategies for its management, along with suggested readings for more detailed information. Numerous decision trees clarify diagnosis, and summary boxes highlight key points and dosage parameters. Other areas covered include leukemias and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, transfusion medicine, hereditary hemochromatosis, the hematologic manifestations of HIV disease, porphyria, and the use of hematopoietc growth factors in clinical practice. Concise, practical, and up-to-date, Primary Hematology offers busy primary care physicians, internists, hematologists, and oncologists a much-needed action-oriented summary of proven approaches to the optimal diagnosis and treatment of hematologic disorders today. Doody Review Services Reviewer: Lisa Boggio, MS, MD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine) Description: Hematology often can be a confusing subject. Articles and book chapters about disease conditions are very long and often not filled with practical information needed to treat patients. Now there is a primer of hematology. Each chapter has concise descriptions of each disease and its pathogenesis in the form of concise text supplemented by many figures and tables. This provides not only complete descriptions of the diseases, but makes a great reference. Purpose: The purpose, to provide clinicians of many disciplines an understanding of common and uncommon problems of hematology, is achieved. Audience: Although it is written for practicing clinicians -- hematologists, cardiologists, neurologists, and internists -- others would also benefit from its information. Medical students and nurses would also find it helpful. Features: The anemias, thrombosis, malignancies, porphyria, and ethics are all covered in a thorough, yet easy to read manner. The sections about porphyria are excellent and the author was able to make an often confusing topic very easy to understand and to put into practical use. There is no paucity of figures. Each adds to the understanding of the topic. Especially notable are the figures in the myeloproliferative disease section written by the editor. They not only add to understanding the topic, but are important examples of disease that should not go unrecognized by the clinician. An example is the figure showing retinal vein distension in polycythemia vera (Figure 3, Plate 10). Assessment: This book gives easy-to-read, in-depth descriptions of various common and uncommon problems encountered in hematology. The tables and figures enhance, but do not rehash, what is in the text. This is an excellent reference for physicians, nurses, and students.
