دربارهٔ کتاب

Thieme congratulates Joseph D. Zuckerman on being chosen by __New York__ magazine for its prestigious Best Doctors 2015 list. From high impact energy injuries to fragility fractures in the elderly, the wide variability in shoulder fractures have made them simultaneously the most common and challenging of shoulder injuries. Based on the authors' extensive clinical and teaching experience, here is your complete guide to the management of fractures of the proximal humerus, clavicle, and scapula. You will find focused discussions of anatomy, diagnosis, fracture classifications, imaging, surgical and non-surgical treatments, complications, and outcomes -- a one-volume compendium of modern shoulder care! The book provides in-depth recommendations for evaluation and management of one, two, three, and four-part fractures and fracture-dislocations, as well as complications that may arise. More than 500 illustrations and radiographs enhance every concept and technique in the book. With a strong emphasis on treatment options and outcome assessment, this book is a must for all orthopedic surgeons, shoulder specialists, orthopedic traumatologists, and residents and fellows who restore function to the injured shoulder.

Zuckerman (orthopedic surgery, New York U.) and Koval (orthopedics, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, New Hampshire) draw on their nearly 20 years of experience, and help from some colleagues, to describe the evaluation and management of fractures about the shoulder, including the proximal humerus, clavicle, and scapula. They present a systematic approach to evaluating fractures from the simplest to the most complex based on a careful assessment of the fracture factors and patient factors that made each injury unique. Then they show how clinicians can use that process to determine the optimal treatment plan for each patient. Black-and-white photographs, line drawings, and x-rays illustrate the text. Reviewer:Mark R Hutchinson, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description:This concise book is dedicated to the evaluation and management of fractures about the shoulder including the proximal humerus, scapula, and clavicle. The overall concept is that following a systematic approach with careful assessment, a treatment approach can be made to optimize outcomes for patients with these injuries. The key unique feature is the concise, straightforward style in which these authors address these complex injuries.
Purpose:The book represents the approach of leading surgeons from the Hospital of Joint Diseases and each chapter is coauthored by either Dr. Zuckerman or Dr. Koval. This presents a unique insight into the approach that these leading surgeons would use for these problems. Admittedly, the authors are careful to present the most common approach to these problems as well as their preferences, tricks, and techniques. The overall goal is valuable and the authors should be commended for creating an easy to read book that addresses these problems efficiently.
Audience:The target audience is obviously shoulder surgeons, orthopedic surgeons who perform any amount of shoulder surgery, orthopedic trauma surgeons, shoulder fellows, and orthopedic residents in training. The style of writing and efficient size make it a great go-to reference and a great read for orthopedic residents and orthopedic surgeons who want to catch up regarding these problems. Dr. Zuckerman is very respected in the field and calls on 20 years of experience dealing with shoulder problems at one of the most prestigious institutions of orthopedics in the Untied States.
Features:As the authors walk stepwise through the various fractures about the shoulder, they accompany their chapters with good quality figures that assist the reader in visualizing the anatomy, pathology, and techniques.
Assessment:I enjoyed this book and found it to be of the same high quality expected of the clinical concise texts provided by Thieme. I believe this will be a well-read book by orthopedic residents and in most orthopedic medical libraries due to its concise approach to a complex series of problems. One can easily pick it up read the appropriate chapter and be ready to jump into correcting a surgical problem.
