Quest'opera sui Sofisti curata da Mario Untersteiner - uno dei più significativi studiosi italiani del pensiero antico (1899-1981) - raccoglie in volume unico i quattro originariamente editi nella collana "Biblioteca di Studi Superiori" della editrice "La Nuova Italia", da tempo non più in circolazione. Untersteiner ha curato personalmente tutti gli autori e tutti i testi anonimi, a eccezione di "Crizia", curato dal suo allievo Antonio Battegazzore. Si tratta della più ricca e completa raccolta di tutto quanto ci è pervenuto dei e sui Sofisti, pensatori che Untersteiner considera espressione di un determinato clima storico, il cui tono è dato dai fatti sociali che sono tipici di quell'epoca. Lo studioso sostiene inoltre la tesi assai originale e stimolante secondo cui la sofistica è in realtà una trasposizione su un piano filosofico della tragedia e delle contraddizioni della vita umana che essa esprime. Nella Introduzione Giovanni Beale illustra l'originalità e l'importanza dell'interpretazione di Untersteiner, che nei suoi lavori sui Sofisti ha lasciato il meglio di sé. This work on Sophists curated by Mario Untersteiner-one of the most significant Italian scholars of ancient thought (1899-1981)-the single volume collects the four originally published in the collection "Biblioteca di Studi Superiori" of "the new Italy", no longer in circulation. Untersteiner has personally overseen all authors and anonymous lyrics, with the exception of "Critias", edited by his pupil Antonio Baca. This is the most extensive and complete collection of all that survives of the Sophists, and thinkers who considers a particular expression historical climate Untersteiner, whose tone is set by the social facts that are typical of that era. The scholar also supports the rather unusual and challenging thesis according to which the sophist is actually a transposition on a philosophical level of tragedy and contradictions of human life that it expresses. In the Introduction John Beale illustrates the originality and importance of the interpretation of Untersteiner, who in his works on the Sophists has left their best.
