دربارهٔ کتاب

The interactions between the thyroid gland and the skin are of profound clinical importance in health and disease. Given the prevalence of thyroid disease worldwide, it is imperative that primary care physicians, endocrinologists, and dermatologists appreciate the scope of these associations so that thyroid disease may be diagnosed and treated expediently. __Thyroid Disorders with Cutaneous Manifestations__ is a single authoritative resource enabling physicians to comprehend the basic science, laboratory evaluation, epidemiology, and clinical aspects of thyroid diseases and their cutaneous manifestations. Specific disorders such as the thyroglossal duct cyst and cutaneous metastases, nonspecific features of the skin and its appendages seen in hyper- and hypothyroidism, and the multiple associations with other dermatologic and systemic diseases are all surveyed, while individual chapters are devoted to various syndromal diseases, such as alopecia in thyroid disease, thyroid dermopathy (pretibial myxedema) and the relationship of autoimmune thyroid disease to chronic idiopathic urticaria and angioedema. Internationally recognized experts have contributed to this comprehensive text, with an unique "editorial perspective" written for each chapter by the Editor which offers a coherent thread to this book’s narrative so that the scope, complexity, and relevance of this text is further understood and appreciated.

The spectrum of the cutaneous manifestations of thyroid disease includes cutaneous metastases from thyroid malignancies and thryoglossal duct cysts, nonspecific alterations of the skin, hair, and nails reflecting both the hyperthyroid and hypothyroid states, and the multiple associations of thyroid disease with other cutaneous and systemic diseases. Internists, family practitioners, pediatricians, geriatricians, and dermatologists address these issues on a daily basis: When is it appropriate to evaluate a patient for thyroid disease? How should the patients be evaluated? How often should testing be performed? Should other family members be screened for thyroid disease? The purpose of The Thyroid in Dermatology is to raise awareness of the vast spectrum of thyroid-skin interactions, and to provide a framework for the appropriate diagnosis and management of these diseases.

Reviewer:Renata H. Mullen, MD(Palo Alto Medical Foundation)
Description:This is a comprehensive guide to dermatologic conditions associated with thyroid disorders as well as a complete, updated review of the pathophysiology of thyroid disease. Each chapter starts with an editorial perspective, which summarizes the pertinent points.
Purpose:According to the editor, the aim of this book is to provide a single resource that will enable physicians to comprehend the basic science, laboratory evaluation, epidemiology, and clinical aspects of thyroid diseases and their cutaneous manifestations. These worthy objectives are, for the most part, met.
Audience:The book is written for practicing dermatologists and internists, but it can be helpful to residents and medical students as well. The editor is known to most dermatologists as the editor and voice of Dialogs in Dermatology. He has assembled a group of internationally recognized authorities in this field and has unified their chapters with his editorial perspective.
Features:The book covers all aspects of thyroid disease, from anatomy to potential therapeutic uses of the thyroid hormone. An extremely useful chapter covers laboratory diagnosis of thyroid disorders. The book's best feature is its comprehensive nature, as it covers the entire spectrum of thyroid abnormalities; yet the length of the book as well as its readability make the daunting task of reviewing this vast material manageable and enjoyable.
Assessment:This is a welcome addition to the library of any physician wishing to have a complete and useful resource of thyroid disease at their fingertips.

Jacques Barzun, the noted Columbia University historian of ideas and culture, once described the feeling that some people experience when they come upon a new reference book. He wrote: “Hand over to one of us a new Dictionary, “Companion,” or Guide, and our eyes first light up and then turn dreamy: we have seized the volume and are off, arm in arm with the guide i or companion. ...” The book now in your hands made my eyes light up. Thyroid Disorders with Cutaneous Manifestations is that kind of book. Heymann, who has been fascinated by this sometimes controversial subject for decades, has brought not only his own expertise, but that of many experts from the fields of the skin and the thyroid gland. Steven Jay Gould wrote about overlapping and nonoverlapping magisteria—this book demonstrates just how much important overlap there is. But it also covers the basics in such a way that dermatologists can find what they need to know about the thyroid and thyroidologists can find what they need to know about the skin. Thyroid Disorders with Cutaneous Manifestations falls neatly into the tra- tion of medical monographs that become standards. They fulfill the roles of gathering, digesting, and synthesizing current knowledge, and they do so in a way that review articles cannot approach and that the scientific literature is not designed to accomplish. The Purpose Of This Book Is To Raise Awareness Of The Vast Spectrum Of Thyroid-skin Interactions, And To Provide A Framework For The Appropriate Diagnosis And Management Of These Diseases.
