In a world dominated by huge conglomerates and struggling with pandemics, non-random neutrino signals are detected coming from a tiny rock in the Oort Cloud. Northern, the largest power, sends spaceships across this vast distance to investigate what may be alien or rival technology but the crews are mysteriously changed and the missions fail. A relief ship is sent and its officers struggle to understand what is happening to them and how to survive and return to Earth. Meanwhile a victim of one of the minor plagues is faced with desperate choices and joins a small band of miracle survivors fleeing from refuge to refuge.
