Purpose:The purpose is to present in a concise manner general principles of fracture care and management strategies so as to maximize good outcomes and minimize complications.
Audience:The main audience is medical students and orthopedics residents.
Features:The book is divided into two sections: general principles and regional injuries. Illustrations are used extensively to show fracture type, mechanism, reduction, and immobilization. Conservative treatment methods are covered well, although there is a greater emphasis on new surgical techniques such as the locking plate system. The vacuum dressing for wound care is illustrated in some extremity wounds. The AO classification of fractures, trauma score, and the mangled extremity severity score are also explained. The general references are limited, but the quality of illustrations and photographs is very good.
Assessment:This concise work fulfills the important role of introducing medical students to orthopedic trauma. Additionally, it teaches orthopedic residents, in a step-by-step manner, the correct ways to assess and manage fractures and dislocations. General orthopedists caring for trauma patients can benefit greatly from this book. I strongly recommend it without reservation.
