Upgrading and Repairing Servers

As usual Scott Mueller is thorough, but unless you must have this now, I recommend waiting until an updated book is released because there are many new technologies that are missing. The book did not intentionally leave newer content out--simply, the technologies were not common at the time of publishing (as they are now). As a result, I rate this as five stars because I chose to purchase this book knowing that new technologies (post publishing) are not included in the book. I will absolutely purchase the update as soon as it is published. Servers are the heart and soul of businesses today. Scott and Jarret tackle the confusing array of server design form factors, power supplies, rack mounts, dual processor setups, RAID, blade technology, InfiniBand, clustering, load balancing and replication. The authors address these topics from an OS-neutral standpoint, focusing solely on how the hardware works, how to choose the right gear, how to install it, and what to do when your beloved server melts down. Although the server community has pined for such a book for years, conflicting design and implementation standards, prohibitive pricing and a "roll-your-own" mentality amongst server professionals prevented a book such as this from becoming reality.
