Hoffmann was a gifted German author and composer whose most well-known work was a fantasy tale entitled The Nutcracker and the Mouse King , which inspired Tchaikovsky's famous ballet. Hoffmann also wrote dozens of tales dealing with the uncanny and the supernatural; this collection brings together a group of his most spine-chilling short works.
