Its a beautiful June day, the perfect climate for Founders Day at Budleigh Hall School. But for Howell the weather is in direct contrast to his mood. In a few hours he must tell his parents whether he will further his education at Oxford or begin work at Trowman Chemicals Ltd. Sitting in his room, mentally wrestling with his decision, he is suddenly overcome by a strange sensation. Feeling no fear or apprehension he realizes he is being transported out of his present life and time. It was the cudgel, held firmly at shoulder level, that saved him from serious injury, perhaps worse breaking the impact of his fall by catching against the side of the opening and becoming jammed there, in the gap where a brick had crumbled away, long enough to cause him to swing sideways then backwards, so that instead of hurtling down head-first he struck the steps first with his hip, then his shoulder, to go sliding down on his back, bumping from step to step, stunned rather than injured by that first impact, unconscious even before he reached the ground.
