On her way to Austin, Texas, to start a new life, Penny Winston is struck by a sudden desire for some peanut butter crackers. It’s such a desperate need that she pulls off the highway into the parking lot of the Val-U-Spot and runs into the store, and when she comes back out, her car is dead. “You want to go see Tom Jennings,” the people at the Val tell her. “He’ll take care of you.” Tom Jennings is the go-to guy of Constantine, Texas, a town with only 697 residents. He’s used to fixing cars and air conditioners and stopped-up plumbing for his neighbors and for people who are just passing through, but something about this dark-haired woman in flip-flops immediately captures his attention... and his heart. Penny has no intention of staying in Constantine. Once her car is fixed, she’ll be on the road again, headed for Austin — unless this good, shy, honest man can get her to forget her old dreams and build some new ones in a town she never heard of before, a place that quickly begins to feel like home.
