Il gioco e il massacro

Esattamente come in Una e una notte (1959), anche in questo libro del 1970 due racconti ‒ sono parole di Flaiano ‒ «Si riflettono l'uno nell'altro e si completano, ed è questo il fine che li unisce». Due racconti che parlano di singolari, amare metamor­fosi: quella di Lorenzo Adamante, arredatore e produttore cinematografico, una faccia che ricorda Humphrey Bogart negli ultimi anni, una invincibile vocazione alla battuta gelida e tagliente («Tutto quello che vuole è morire in odore di pubblicità» dice di uno scrittore vanitoso e con smanie mistiche), una diffusa fama di omosessualità che pare misteriosamente dissolversi nella relazione con An­na Bac. E quella di Liza Baldwin, la giovane ricca, bellissima, «certamente kennediana» eppure stanca e sull'orlo della nevrosi, con cui Giorgio Fabro, catapultato a New York per sviluppare il soggetto di un film, va a vivere: per scoprirla poi, con stupore, donna-cane. Il fatto è che, come i suppliziati di una volta, «chiusi in casse dalle quali sporgevano soltanto con la testa», Adamante e Liza si rispecchiano e ci raccontano, per ingannare il tormento, «le loro storie, sempre meno improbabili in una società dove la metamorfosi è una vita di ricambio, tra il gioco e il massacro».
